Grass is Northern Ireland’s major crop, so it is essential that we get the most out of it. Along with good soil maintenance (pH, nutrients NPK and sulphur), reseeding swards can be the key to increasing profitability.

You can find AFBI in the Government exhibit at stand number A19

The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) exhibit at Balmoral Show this year will focus on the value of using the best varieties for reseeding swards to increase profitability.

New varieties of grass are tested and evaluated for their agronomic potential under silage and grazing systems at AFBI’s Plant Testing Station in Crossnacreevy. Plant trials are conducted under local conditions in the field and laboratory. Tests are conducted, under strict scientific protocols, to examine breeders varieties for vigour, resistance to disease with the best performers included on the DARD Grass Clover Recommended List.

AFBI scientists will be on hand to answer any queries you might have about grass and clover varieties, as well as our other plant testing evaluations; cereal crops, potatoes and forage maize. You can find us in the Government exhibit at stand number A19.
