Ministerial approval has now been provided for DAERA’s Science Strategy Framework. This framework has been put in place by DAERA as they consider science to be of fundamental importance to deliver their objectives.

DAERA have highlighted that science is a key enabler for informing policy development, meeting statutory obligations, measuring outcomes, providing advice and information, promoting innovation, managing risks to society and the environment and supporting rural areas.  Indeed  in the context of the UK leaving the EU, DAERA recognise the importance of the science evidence DAERA uses to support policy development and underpin statutory requirements is more important than ever.

Consequently, DAERA have put in place a coherent strategy, through this Framework, as guidance over the next 15 years on how it will use science to further its policy aims, optimise the value it achieves from science and deliver positive impacts for the agri-food industry, the wider rural economy and the environment as a whole.

This Framework will be important for AFBI going forward, and in the spirit of partnership working AFBI have been included on the various DAERA boards and working groups which formulated the Framework.  Furthermore, AFBI staff continue to contribute to the various working groups which are developing supporting documentation.
