British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) Annual Conference

Areas of Expertise: Sustainable Livestock

Several AFBI staff and students attended The British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) Annual Conference from 9th to 11th April.

This year the conference was jointly organised by BSAS, the World Poultry Science Association and the Irish Agricultural Research Forum.  As such it was considered the UK and Ireland’s premier animal science conference and in recognition of its popularity and impact, was in Dublin at the renowned GAA venue, Croke Park.

AFBI had representation from the Executive Management Team, Project Leaders, Research Scientists and PhD students, who took an active role in chairing sessions and presenting both papers and posters.The theme of the conference was “Innovation to Compete in the Global Livestock Industry.”

AFBI staff contributed to a wide range of sessions including: Impact of Brexit on the Irish and UK Agri-Food Sector; Dairy Systems; Behaviour; Calves; Beef cattle; Dairy Cow Feeding/Nutrition and Effect of Diet on Carcass Quality: Pig and Poultry.

Social events were of course also enjoyed by many; including a quiz on Monday evening, which was won by a team of PhD students from AFBI Hillsborough.

Throughout the conference, AFBI staff and students took advantage of the opportunity to learn about innovations in livestock science, reflect on the changes facing the animal science sector and develop relationships with many of the other premier research bodies throughout the UK, Ireland and beyond.
