Professor Scollan to outline challenges to agricultural science in a post Brexit era

NIIAS is pleased to announce that Professor Nigel Scollan, the recently appointed Director of the Institute for Global Food Security and Professor of Animal Science at Queen`s University Belfast has agreed to make a presentation at a Breakfast Seminar on Wednesday 16th November 2016 on the topic “Challenges to Agricultural Science in a post Brexit era.

The seminar, kindly sponsored by United Feeds, will be held in the Conference Hall, AFBI, Hillsborough, Co Down , BT26 6DR, with a light breakfast served at 8:00am and the presentation commencing at 8:20am.

Professor Scollan, originally from Northern Ireland, studied animal science at the University of Edinburgh where he also completed his PhD, before moving to the University of Guelph. In 1993, he took up a research scientist position at the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research at the University of Aberstwyth, which then became the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences. This Institute became one of the largest groups of academics and support staff in the UK focusing on plant, animal, environment and land based sciences.

In 2011/12, he was President of the British Society of Animal Science, and over the years has been involved in many government, industry and academic forums addressing issues in agriculture and food.

Speaking ahead of the breakfast seminar, Louise Millsopp, Chairman of NI Institute of Agricultural Science said ‘we are delighted that Professor Scollan had agreed to make this presentation. With his extensive experience in agricultural and food research and knowledge exchange, we are looking forward hearing his views on the challenges that agricultural science will face as the United Kingdom exits the European Union.'

This breakfast seminar is open to NIIAS members and non-members. Cost for NIIAS Members is £10 per person, for Non-Members £15 and Students £5.
