AFBI recently hosted the second International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) workshop on the impact of ecosystem and environmental drivers on Irish Sea fisheries management (WKIrish).
A series of workshops on the impact of ecosystem and environmental drivers on Irish Sea has been organized by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). This is a three year process focusing on improving single-species stock assessments (principally cod, haddock, whiting, plaice and herring), incorporating a mixed fisheries model, and developing the integration of ecosystem aspects working towards integrated assessment and advice. The workshops facilitate information sharing between fisheries scientists and stakeholders to share information and develop ideas to address specific issues with the Irish Sea.
The current workshop, hosted at AFBI, provides an opportunity to present methods and data aimed at addressing these issues and to evaluate the quality and use of existing data sets, update information of stock biology and prepare input data for stock assessment models.
With international interest in Irish Sea fisheries, collaboration with colleagues from other institutes is central to this process. Participants in the workshop included scientists from AFBI, the Irish Marine Institute, Cefas (UK), fishing industry representatives and NGOs.
