Agroforestry workshop - 27 May 2025

Areas of Expertise: Environmental Protection,  Grassland and Plant Science
Service: Research & Development

An agroforestry workshop was held on 27th May at AFBI Hillsborough as part of the DAERA-funded Evidence & Innovation project “Agroforestry: Responding to Climate Change – Adaptation and Mitigation.” The workshop aimed to raise awareness of the potential role of agroforestry in delivering a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector in Northern Ireland, while also highlighting the need for strategic developments to support its growth and uptake.

The workshop brought together AFBI scientists, DAERA Policy and leading researchers from across the UK to share knowledge and insights on how agroforestry can contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation for sustainable and resilient agriculture. Presentations outlined the multiple benefits of agroforestry including enhanced biodiversity, improved soil health, better habitat connectivity on farm, and animal welfare.

The presentations emphasised that, while agroforestry offers numerous benefits for farmers, there is a need for the establishment of clear and robust policy frameworks before encouraging widespread adoption and expansion as current guidance does not include the full range of potential agroforestry system designs or reflect the wider environmental benefits that well-designed systems can offer.

This event also revisited AFBI’s long-term standing and contribution to applied agroforestry research, which dates to the late 1980s and highlighted key contributions from AFBI scientists to changing land use policies. These studies have explored agroforestry applications in supporting climate mitigation goals, enhancing animal welfare and supporting net zero targets by quantifying carbon sequestration potential.

Panel sessions explored applications of agroforestry in different farming systems, its economic viability, and policy frameworks drawing on examples from across the UK and Ireland. These sessions emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary research and approach, knowledge transfer and integrated policy support for most effective implementation and uptake of agroforestry in Northern Ireland.

The workshop concluded with a networking discussion, encouraging collaboration and knowledge exchange among attendees. As Northern Ireland further develops its climate action and sustainable agriculture strategies, the workshop highlighted the importance of agroforestry as a viable and practical land-use option but one that requires supportive mechanisms to foster uptake to deliver long-term benefits.
