  • Open panel discussion based on the questions asked by the Chair
  • Incoming questions from the audience via chat function or hand raising function

Session 1: Salmonids (09.15 – 10.40)

This session will focus on outputs from salmon and sea trout tagging and tracking over the past 4 years of the COMPASS project

Chair: Cathal Gallagher (IFI)

Panel Members: Willie Roche & James Barry (IFI), Robert Rosell & Richard Kennedy (AFBI), Art Niven (DAERA)

Rapporteur: Erika Bodnar

Presentations (1 hour):

  • Sea trout (Richard Kennedy, AFBI)
  • Salmon between river and shelf edge (Willie Roche & James Barry, IFI)
  • Informing the Need for MPA’s for salmon & sea trout (Robert Rosell, AFBI)

Panel discussion (25 minutes):

  1. Future policy for Sea Trout management
  2. Future policy for Salmon management
  3. Are differences in management of species between regions justified or should there be more harmonized policy for their survival?

Session 2: Oceanography (10.50 – 12.15)

This session will focus on oceanographic monitoring, new technology and partnership supported by COMPASS to develop regional long-term observations.

Chair: Glenn Nolan (Marine Institute)

Panel Members: Oliver O’Cadhla (DHLGH), Evin McGovern (MI), Alejandro Gallego (MS), Andrew Dale (SAMS)

Rapporteur: Adam Mellor (AFBI)

Presentations (1 hour)

  • Moorings and a case study : Loch Ewe – Jennifer Scott (MS)
  • Pressures: Ocean acidification - Margot Cronin (MI)
  • Technology: COMPASS Glider missions - Andy Dale & Estelle Dumont (SAMS)

Panel discussion (25 min):

  1. What is the legacy impact of the Oceanographic Activity?
  2. What are the obstacles to integrated and long-term observations?
  3. What should we prioritise and where?

Session 3: Data Management (12.15 – 13.15)

This session will focus on data values chains in marine science, plus the lessons from and the legacy of the data management task in the Compass Project

Chair: Clare Postlethwaite (BODC)

Panel Members: Adam Leadbetter (MI), Adam Mellor (AFBI), Lucy Scott (UNESCO)

Rapporteur: Kate Gilmore

Presentations (30 min)

  • Introduction to Data Management in COMPASS (Adam Leadbetter MI)
  • Demonstration of the COMPASS Data Portal (Sagar Kevin MI)

Data Infrastructurese: European and Global - Mark Hebdon (British Oceanographic Data Centre)

Panel discussion (30 min):

  1. How to overcome the “pulse” in data management activity in a project (engagement at the planning/beginning stages and right at the end, but drops off in the middle)
  2. How best to make project data interoperable with regional / global systems
  3. What is the data legacy (value chain) for COMPASS / Interreg Va projects

Session 4: Ocean sound and marine mammal observations from passive acoustics (14.00 – 15.25)

Chair: Ben Wilson (SAMS)

Panel Members: Denise Risch (SAMS), Ewan Edwards (MS), Suzanne Beck (AFBI)

  • The wider scope of passive acoustic monitoring: emerging opportunities and unexpected finds    (Suzanne Beck, AFBI)
  • Legacy and importance of long term data time series for monitoring MPA’s  (Denise Risch, SAMS)

Panel discussion (25 min):

  1. The value of PAM for MPA designation and monitoring.
  2. PAM and other ocean observations: opportunities and synergies
