Areas include animal performance and environmental impacts, energetic efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions and animal health and welfare.
Specialist facilities include
- AFBI sheep flock: 320 breeding ewes.
- Several ram breeds depending on research needs, currently Belclare, Lleyn, Highlander, Texel, Suffolk and Meatlinc
- Grazing platform at AFBI Loughgall
- 36 group pens for winter housing and indoor lambing in March-April
- 6 individual calorimetric chambers at Hillsborough for detailed metabolism and greenhouse gas studies
- AFBI experts have access to a network of more than 10 hill and lowland commercial farms across NI, where management strategies can be applied and monitored consistently across farms.
