Service: Specialist Facilities

AFBI has Containment Level 1, 2 and 3 laboratories for the safe containment and analysis of microorganisms of animal health and public health significance.

Containment category 1, 2 and 3 laboratories

AFBI has a suite of Containment Level 1, 2 and 3 laboratories that are used to analyse and conduct research on all microorganisms from the most harmless to the most dangerous.

The food pathogen capability includes:

  • Isolating and identifying pheno- and genotyping foodborne pathogens:  Salmonella spp., E. coli O157, Campylobacter spp.,  Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium avium subsp  paratuberculosis  and Clostridium botulinum
  • Determining the effects of food preparation and cooking factors on the persistence and dissemination of food spoilage and food poisoning organisms
  • Challenge testing service offered to industry
  • Improving food safety through tracking the survival and persistence of food-borne pathogens in food processing environments
