AFBI Crossnacreevy conducts variety performance trials on all the major
cereals, potatoes and major forage species (grasses, clovers & forage maize) used in Northern Ireland,
to produce the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) Recommended Lists.
These
recommended list trials
identify the best performing new varieties under local conditions and provide descriptions of their
main agronomic and quality characteristics. These tests are conducted at various sites across
Northern Ireland and at the Plant Testing Station, Crossnacreevy. AFBI Crossnacreevy, also assesses
varieties of new crops that are showing potential for local production.
