Northern Ireland’s coastline is rich with species suitable for intertidal exploitation. Species such as razor clams, mussels, cockles, periwinkles and oysters are all harvested from the intertidal area. In Northern Ireland, as of yet, there is no definition as to what level of harvesting is classified as for commercial use as opposed to for personal use.In addition, there is currently no licensing system operating. Therefore no landings are required to be recorded meaning that currently there is a lack of data on what species are being harvested, the quantities of these species harvested and the location of harvesting, the sustainability of this sector and the economic contribution of intertidal harvesting to Northern Ireland.
This work will aim to increase the data available on intertidal harvesting in Northern Ireland through working with harvesters and processors. The information collected will include the species being harvested and the location and quantities of harvesting.
