This website outlines the objectives of the Inshore Fisheries project and provides an up-to-date source of information on the project activities.
In 2007 a review of inshore fisheries in Northern Ireland was carried out by a stakeholder advisory group comprising representatives from the fishing industry, the mariculture and angling sectors, environmental NGOs, local government, scientists and other interested parties.
The aim was to advise DARD on the future management of inshore fisheries. One of the key objectives highlighted in this review was the development of a comprehensive strategy for inshore fisheries which will address management measures for non-quota species in the inshore sector.
The development of the strategy will include full stakeholder involvement giving those involved in the inshore sector an opportunity to have their say in its future management. The strategy produced will
- Carry out a review on the current status of Northern Ireland’s inshore fisheries
- Examine the physical, economic and environmental pressures on the Northern Ireland inshore sector
- Examine the interaction between fisheries and other inshore activities (marine renewables, aggregate extraction, conservation areas etc)
- Take into account wider marine objectives such as the achievement of Good Environmental Status by 2020
- Review the current inshore management structures in Northern Ireland, the UK and Ireland
- Identify potential management strategies for the Northern Ireland inshore sector
- Assess the benefits of the potential management strategies for Northern Ireland and the issues associated with their implementation
- Gain stakeholder input into the potential management options
This project will also provide the scientific input into the development the strategy.
