The Chemical Surveillance Branch of AFBI Veterinary Sciences Division (then part
of the Department of Veterinary Science, Queen’s University Belfast) was the co-ordinating partner of
a EU-wide consortium which received €907K from the European Commission under its 5th Framework Programme
“Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources” Key Action 1 (Food Safety) in 2000 for a four year
research project (QLK1-CT-1999-00142) entitled:
"FoodBRAND - Bound Residues And Nitrofuran Detection:
development of rapid multi-residue screening tests and definitive multi-residue Reference Methods for
tissue-bound residues of the nitrofurans to monitor the effectiveness of the EU ban on the use of nitrofurans
in food animal production".
AFBI and FoodBRAND were instrumental in uncovering major abuse of
the banned nitrofuran
antibiotics in various global livestock industries and in providing new technologies and advice to industries
and governments to deal with this previously unknown consumer food safety issue.
