The Veterinary Science Division (VSD) of AFBI Stormont undertakes the analysis of marine biotoxins in support of European Union (EC) Commission Regulation 853/2004 and subsequent regulations which specify the methods of analysis to be used for each toxin group.
Chemical Surveillance Branch is at the forefront of development of alternative methods for biotoxin analysis, with a biosensor method for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (domoic acid) in place and EC-funded research programmes aimed at developing biosensor methods for Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning and Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning in progress.
