Statutory Testing

Fish and shellfish

Testing is carried out as required by the European Union to maintain:
  • The status of Northern Ireland as an approved zone for viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) and infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) in fish. 2008/427/EC.
  • The status of the entire coastline of Northern Ireland as an approved zone for Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae (excluding Lough Foyle and Strangford Lough for the latter) in oysters (Ostrea edulis).
  • Additional guarantees for Northern Ireland in respect of Gyrodactylus salaris, Renibacterium salmoninarum (the cause of bacterial kidney disease) and spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV). 2004/453/EC.
  • Surveillance and contingency planning for pathogens. 2006/88/EC.
  • Fish Health Examination as required by the Environment Agency under Section 30 of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act (1975) in England and Wales to permit movement of fish for release into the wild.
