The main types of mushroom pest:
Adult
sciarids are small (c.3-4 mm), delicate, two-winged flies which are dark grey/
black with large compound eyes and long, threadlike antennae. Females are generally larger than males
and their abdomens are often distended with eggs.
Adult phorids
are slightly smaller (2-3 mm) but more robust flies than sciarids.
They are darker in colour with a hump-backed appearance with no obvious differences between male and
female flies.
