Assessment tools to determine the variability of nutrient composition in cattle slurry for on-farm decision support
Supervisors:
Dr. John Quinn, Queen’s University, Belfast, Dr. Peter Frost, Agri-Food and Bioscience Institute, Northern Ireland (AFBI), Stan Lalor and Dr. David Wall, Teagasc, Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford
Project aim:
The objectives of this project are:
- To establish the influence of farm management, farming system, animal type and animal diet on cattle slurry characteristics (dry matter, and nutrient concentrations).
- To develop decision support tools for predicting cattle slurry characteristics based on simple farm management variables.
- To evaluate the efficacy and ease of use of on-farm assessment tools for assisting in nutrient management decision making at farm level.
- To develop NIRS calibration curves for characteristics of cattle slurry.
The project will include laboratory experiments and collection of on-farm data.
Background:
Maximising the fertiliser value of cattle slurry offers significant potential for farmers to reduce fertilizer costs. The knowledge in Ireland on how the recovery of applied nutrients from cattle slurry can be maximised has advanced substantially in recent years. However, a knowledge gap remains with regard to accurate assessment of the precise nutrients contents of slurries being applied.
Laboratory analysis of the nutrient content of slurry can be limited in its application due to the time delays between sampling and receipt of results. Farmers need results almost instantly in order to make decisions on application rates. This project is aimed towards developing tools that will make faster and more accurate estimates of slurry nutrient contents.
A combination of approaches will be used. The relationship between variations in farming system, housing, animal diet and farm management on the final slurry nutrient content will be investigated. From these relationships, models and decision support tools for predicting slurry characteristics based on simple categorical farm data will be developed. The potential for on-farm assessment tools to deliver quick and accurate estimates of nutrient contents will be evaluated, including an assessment of their applicability on-farm regarding labour and cost. The potential for faster delivery of laboratory analysis of cattle slurries using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) will be assessed as an alternative to standard laboratory methods.
This project aims to deliver simple, easy to use tools for improving the speed and reliability of information on nutrients contents of slurries. This will allow farmers to increase the precision with which they can include nutrients from cattle slurry in the overall nutrient management programme of their farms. This will result in improved use of cattle slurries as a fertilizer, thereby giving cost savings for farmers, increased nutrient efficiency on farms and decreased environmental impact from cattle farming systems.
Requirements:
MSc. or at least an Honours Bachelor degree in environmental sciences, biological sciences, biology, chemistry, agriculture or related discipline. Good background knowledge of plant nutrient management and appropriate national regulations is desirable.
The applicant will register for a PhD at The Queen’s University of Belfast, and experimental work will be undertaken at Teagasc, Johnstown Castle, Wexford. The applicant should have a good working knowledge of English (spoken and written).
Scholarship:
The Teagasc Walsh Fellowship provides €21,000 per annum for three years from which university fees are paid.
If you wish to be considered for this position please send a completed CV containing details of your academic and research experience and contact details of two referees to Stan Lalor, Teagasc, Johnstown Castle, Wexford, Ireland. (
Stan.Lalor@teagasc.ie).

Evaluation of biogas production and Green House Gas (GHG) mitigation from anaerobic digestion (AD) of pig manure with co-digestion of crops and crop by-products
A three-year project “Evaluation of biogas production and GHG mitigation from AD of pig manure with co-digestion of crops and crop by-products” has recently been funded by Irish Department of Agriculture and Food under the Research Stimulus Fund. The total funding of the project is €940,000. Three partner organizations will participate in this project: Environmental Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering/Environmental Change Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway); Moorepark Research Centre, Teagasc (the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority); and Agri-Food and Bioscience Institute (AFBI), Hillsborough, Northern Ireland.
The successful applicant will conduct laboratory and meso-scale experiments in NUI Galway and at Moorepark Research Centre, Fermoy Co. Cork.. The components of the research project will include: (1) literature review of AD of pig manure, including biogas production, impact on GHG emissions, utilization of crops and crop by-products as substrates for co-digestion; (2) investigation of biogas production and optimum operational conditions at laboratory- and meso-scale levels; (3) determination of mass balance for major plant nutrients; (4) determination of GHG emissions from digestate at laboratory-, meso- and field-scale levels; and (5) life cycle assessment of AD of pig manure co-digested with crops/crop by-products.
The PhD student will receive a high level of support from the three partner institutions. The Environmental Research Group at NUI, Galway has established an environmental analysis lab, a biosensor lab and a molecular analysis lab. Currently, there are five postdoctoral researchers researching biofuel production, genetic analysis, biosensors and mathematical modeling in this group. The successful PhD student will learn advanced techniques and acquire knowledge in molecular analysis, mathematic modeling and AD from these experienced researchers.
The stipend paid to the successful candidate will be €21,000, €23,000 and €25,000 per annum in year 1, 2 and 3 of the project, respectively. Registration fees must be paid by the student out of this stipend.
Applicants must have a degree in environmental engineering, science or related discipline. Although not essential it would be preferable if candidates had previously obtained a masters degree.
Please send your CV and a cover letter with names and contact details of three referees to Dr. Xinmin Zhan (Xinmin.zhan@nuigalway.ie).
