AFBI Stormont

This major international Centre is the base for AFBI's Veterinary Sciences Division (VSD), which is dedicated to animal health & welfare and food safety. This multidisciplinary laboratory complex, located in Belfast is equipped with the latest technology including large and small animal facilities.

AFBI Stormont's aim is to increase the efficiency of Northern Ireland farming practice, enhancing the competitiveness of Northern Ireland livestock produce in local and international markets and to maintain the integrity and safety of the food chain.
VSD's main departments are:
  • Chemical Surveillance
    an EU National Reference Laboratory for veterinary drug residue control. It is a recognised centre of excellence for antibody production, immunological, microbiological, biosensor screening assays and chemical confirmation methods based on chromatography and mass spectroscopy.
    • Monitoring chemical residues in meat, milk, eggs and shellfish
  • Bacteriology
    provides expertise to the public sector and industry for contract research, primarily in relation to animal and human health. The Department encompasses the OIE Reference Laboratory for animal leptospirosis, is a National EU Reference Laboratory for animal salmonellosis and is a recognised centre of excellence for bovine tuberculosis research.
  • Virology
    has substantial expertise in international research collaboration and project management. It has gained international recognition for its research on detection, control and early pathogenesis of viruses of economic importance and is involved in a number of international collaborative projects in vaccinology, molecular virology, development of novel diagnostics, and immunopathogenesis.
  • Disease Surveillance & Investigation
    provides a diagnostic service for diseases of livestock, poultry and fish. It is involved in a range of multi-disciplinary research projects including studies on liver fluke in ruminants, salmonid alphaviruses, necrotic enteritis in poultry and circovirus infection in pigs.
  • Immunodiagnostics
    provides laboratory testing and specialist advice in support of disease surveillance and eradication schemes for cattle, poultry, pigs, sheep and goats.  Research and development projects improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these programmes. It also co-ordinates emergency responses to epizootic diseases, such as avian influenza, Newcastle disease and Foot-and-Mouth disease.

Directions to AFBI Stormont
From Dublin/South/West
  1. From the M1, join the Westlink heading for the end of the M2.
  2. Take the M3 Bridge (signs for Newtownards/Belfast East.(A20))
  3. Leave the M3 Motorway at junction A2 and go straight ahead into A20 (Newtownards Road)
  4. Continue straight up the A20, which becomes the Upper Newtownards Road
  5. Go past Stormont Parliament Buildings until you come to Dundonald House on left and a set of traffic lights
  6. Turn left at the traffic lights into Stoney Road
  7. Continue on this road, through two sharp bends and AFBI Stormont is located on the left.
From North/International Airport/Ferries
  1. Join M2 for Belfast continuing along M2 over M3 bridge.
  2. Take the first Exit off the bridge (Signs for Queens Island/Newtownards. Get in lane for Newtownards(A20)
  3. As from step 4 above.
From City Airport/East
  1. Exit Airport, Join the Outer Ring(A55)
  2. Continue along Outer Ring until the Newtownards Rd junction (signposted Newtownards, A20)
  3. Turn left along the upper Newtownards Rd.
  4. Follow directions from step 4 above.
