AFBI Omagh is part of the Disease Surveillance & Investigation Branch of AFBI's
Veterinary Sciences Division.

AFBI Omagh aims to promote the health
and welfare of farm animals. It
provides a rapid laboratory animal disease surveillance and diagnostic service, in modern laboratories,
to veterinary practitioners, livestock owners, poultry companies and the Department of Agriculture and
Rural Development (DARD). The laboratory receives submissions of dead animals (including poultry)
and clinical specimens such as blood, milk or faeces from live animals. Accurate diagnosis is
necessary for effective treatment and prevention of deaths and productivity losses due to disease.
The
laboratory’s staff also provide technology transfer programmes for veterinary surgeons and industry
and undertake diagnostic investigations of new and emerging diseases and diseases of economic importance.
Statutory work for DARD, including forensic examinations and examination of tissues from the tuberculosis
eradication scheme, is also carried out. Research topics at AFBI Omagh include animal diseases
of economic importance, such as caseous lymphadenitis in sheep, and the role of foxes as a reservoir
for pathogens of domestic animals and humans.
