Head of Agri-Food & Environmental Sciences
Dr Neill was born in Belfast and is a graduate in medical microbiology from Queen’s University, Belfast (QUB). He received a PhD from QUB following studies in food microbiology and he subsequently joined the Department of Agriculture’s veterinary laboratories. Having gained considerable experience in veterinary diagnostic, surveillance and research microbiology, he became Head of the Bacteriology Department in 1997.
Dr Neill has considerable international research experience with expertise relating to zoonotic and food-borne pathogens and animal disease pathogenesis. In 2002, he held a temporary appointment as Deputy Chief Scientist in the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's (DARD) Science Service, responsible for the Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences Division.
Dr Neill was appointed as DARD’s Chief Agricultural Analyst in 2005. In March 2006 he was appointed as Deputy CEO of AFBI. Dr Neill is also Director of the Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences Division.
