Robin obtained his PhD in Zoology at Queen's University and, following a period as a Biological Oceanographer in the South African Sea Fisheries Branch, joined the Science Service in 1977 as Head of the Fisheries Research Laboratory at Coleraine. He was responsible for both freshwater and marine science and developed the Department's marine fisheries science programme of research and assessment of commercially important fish stocks in the Irish Sea.
As a key part of this developing programme he was responsible for proposing and acquiring the marine research vessel "Lough Foyle" and designing and implementing the associated management contract and the additional scientific team. In 1987 he was promoted to Senior Principal Scientific Officer, Head of Science Administration, in the Chief Scientific Officer's office and held this position until moving into AFBI on 1 April 2006 as Head of the Chief Executive's Office.
In this current role he is responsible for secretarial and other support to the AFBI Board, provision of advice to the Chief Executive Officer, Media Services, research administration, contracts and AFBI's business development.
