Freshwater fisheries: Research Projects
  • A study of pike migrations in Lower Lough Erne in relation to sanctuary areas, commercial and recreational exploitation.
  • Long term studies of Erne fish populations.
28/10/2008: Supplied with:
  • A copy of the Final draft of a now published paper on the Erne Pike Project. ( Rosell, R.S., and MacOscar, K.C., 2002. Movements of pike, Esox Lucius, in Lower Lough Erne, determined by mark-recapture between 1994 and 2000. Fisheries Management and Ecology, 9, 189-196.)
  • A summary report on the Erne fish time series.

08/08/2008: The following information was requested in regard to an incinerator installation at the VSD site, Stoney Road:
  1. Does the VSD site, Stoney Road have an incinerator installation for the disposal of non-hazardous waste.
  2. Has AFBI (VSD) applied for a permit/licence in terms of Regulation 9 of the Pollution Prevention Control Regulations 2003.
  3. What aspects and/or features of your installation led you to the view that it is/was necessary for you to apply for a licence?
  4. What advice were you given by EHS and/or DEFRA in compliance with Regulation 9?
  5. If your installation does not have a permit, then why not?
29/08/2008:  Responses made to the questions were:
  1. Yes.
  2. Under Part 2 of Pollution Prevention Control Regulations 2003 DARD/AFBI is deemed to have made an application for a permit to operate an existing part B installation.
  3. Under Section 5 (1) of Pollution Prevention Control Regulations 2003, the disposal of radioactive waste by incineration is defined as a part B activity.  This is also confirmed by DOE Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate who regularly monitor our incinerator.

  5. The prescribed date for an existing part B installation is the determination date.  The determination date is when DOE decide whether or not to grant a permit.  DOE have until March 2009 to make this determination.

25/10/2008: Response on behalf of AFBI(NI):
To all questions the AFBI response was NIL and Not Applicable.
There are currently no AFBI staff on suspension.

01/07/2008: The following information was requested:
  1. Number of IT staff employed by your organisation (definition: those staff spending 50% or more of their time using IT skills & knowledge);
  2. The annual IT capital expenditure budget for 2008-09 (to purchase new applications, hardware, software, etc);
  3. The annual IT revenue budget (for support, maintenance, licensing etc) for 2008-09;
  4. Details of any existing internal or external IT governance structures (i.e. IT Steering Committees) used by your organisation; and
  5. Information on your IS/IT Strategy (please note I do not require a copy), but would like to know:
    - When it was published;
    - When is it due for review;
    - Was it approved by your  Board; and
    - Was this created by staff, or did you engage consultants.

  4. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) between DARD and AFBI sets out the basis on which DARD delivers managed services to AFBI. DARD performance in relation to the SLA is discussed in regular formal meetings between AFBI’s Biometrics & Information Systems Branch and DARD’s Information Systems Branch.
    AFBI Senior Management Team (SMT) is provided with regular updates on IT-related matters.

    AFBI Audit Committee reviews significant audit findings and recommendations relating to IT and monitors the implementation of agreed changes.
  5. AFBI’s Biometrics & Information Systems Branch is taking the lead in preparing, and seeking SMT approval for, a formal IS Strategic Framework that will guide AFBI’s future involvement in ICT. Once approved and published, it is intended that the Strategy will be reviewed in full every three years.

27/03/2008:
Forwarded a scientific paper on same. The results reported in this paper represent the only scientific information that was derived from the project before its premature end.

  1. What is the position with Crossnacreevy and finding an alternative site for variety testing?
  2. Will variety move to Hillsborough?
  3. How much did the Crossnacrevy site make?
  4. Who will make these decisions and when?
01/04/2008:
  1. A Crossnacreevy Relocation Project Team has been formed and is presently looking at possible DARD-owned locations for the potential relocation of the AFBI work programme which is currently carried out at Crossnacreevy.
  2. Hillsborough is among a number of possible locations being examined by the Relocation Project Team.
  3. The Crossnacreevy site has not yet been put on the market.
  4. DARD is the owner of the Crossnacreevy site and will be responsible for decisions related to its disposal. AFBI carries out the work programme and is the employer of the staff at the site and will be responsible for consequential decisions relating to these areas.
