The Beef Cattle Rationing model was developed using data from beef production experiments undertaken at AFBI Hillsborough between 1992 and 1999. The main role of the model is to predict the performance of beef cattle offered grass silage/concentrate-based diets using the chemical composition and/or intake characteristics of the grass silage. The model provides information on the performance of a wide range of animals across different breeds, genders and conditions which can be used as a tool by animal nutritionists and farmers to optimise systems of beef production. The model provides two estimation options:
- The number of weeks to achieve a specified final live weight
- The final liveweight achieved after a specified feeding period
The model should be used with silage analysis results obtained from the Hillsborough Feeding Information System (HFIS).

Note: Excel Macros must be enabled, with Macro security level set to Medium, when running the Beef Cattle Rationing Model. To change Macro security levels from within Excel, select Tools > Macro > Security and select the Medium setting.
