Molecular microbiology technologies

These technologies have revolutionised our ability to rapidly detect and quantify microorganisms from a range of environments and hosts.

AFBI has considerable expertise in developing and utilising specialist molecular microbiology technologies to rapidly detect and characterise microorganisms. AFBI has cutting-edge molecular microbiology facilities, including next generation sequencers.

This capacity and in-house expertise enables AFBI to provide rapid diagnostic services for animal disease control, monitoring the occurrence and spread of zoonotic organisms in production systems, undertaking pathogen identification and discovery, and conducting microbial source tracking and the development of control strategies.

AFBI has developed a number of high-resolution DNA “fingerprinting” strain typing methods, which allow the identification and tracking of genetically distinct bovine TB strains and the more accurate identification of epidemiologically-linked cases and herds.
