World Soil Day

World Soil Day
Soils: where food begins

We are celebrating the United Nations World Soil Day - Soils: where food begins, as soil nutrient loss is recognised as a major soil degradation process threatening nutrition.  It  has been identified as being among the most critical problems at a global level for food security and sustainability.
AFBI's work on a range of soil projects includes the European Joint Programme Cofund on Agricultural Soil Management (EJP Soil) where AFBI is the only UK partner and leads a national hub.  We are also managing the province wide Soil Nutrient Health Scheme which is now rolling out soil sampling to all registered farms in Zone 1 of 4.

European Joint Programme on Soils

European farmers describe their soil challenges across Europe in 2022.  Including 2 farmers from Co Down, Thomas Steele and Shaw Hanna.

The solutions for improving soil health are highlighted in the video below which was commissioned for World Soil Day 2022 . Shaw Hanna from Co Down adds his views on solutions for improvement alongside fellow farmers from across Europe.
